Wattage used to tell you how bright a bulb was. With LED it tells you almost nothing. A 20-watt LED floor lamp can outshine a 60-watt incandescent bulb, and two LED lamps drawing the same power can differ by a third in output. The number that matters is lumens.
Lumens, watts, and why the swap happened
Lumens measure light produced. Watts measure power consumed. With incandescent bulbs the two moved together closely enough that people used watts as shorthand for brightness. LED broke that link by making efficiency vary widely between fixtures.
A rough conversion for the old habit:

Typical consumer LED lands somewhere around 80–100 lumens per watt. So an 18-watt LED lamp is broadly in the territory of a 100-watt old bulb, and a 23-watt lamp somewhat above it — useful as a sense of scale rather than a specification.
How much a room needs
These are working figures, not standards. They assume mid-tone walls and a ceiling around eight feet. Dark walls swallow light and push every number up.

Total is not the same as one fixture
The figures above are for the room, not for a single lamp. A living room at 2,400 lumens from one ceiling fitting is a harshly lit living room. The same 2,400 spread across a floor lamp, a table lamp and a ceiling light is a comfortable one.
This is the practical argument for layering. Splitting the total across three or four sources at different heights gives you the same amount of light with none of the flatness. We cover the approach in layered lighting.
Three things that change the numbers
- Wall color. White walls bounce light back into the room. Deep colors absorb it. A dark room can need 30–40 percent more output for the same effect.
- Ceiling height. Light falls off with distance. High ceilings need more, or need the light brought lower.
- Age. Reading comfortably at sixty typically takes noticeably more light than it did at twenty-five. If a room is used mainly by one person, size it for them rather than the average.
Why dimming makes the target less critical
If you can dim, you can afford to buy slightly more light than you think you need. Too much light that dims down is a solved problem. Too little light is not fixable at all.
Lamps like the Oblate at 23 W and the Light Triad at 18 W are sized for a living room as a main source, and both dim from the remote — so the upper figure is a ceiling rather than a fixed setting.
A quick way to check a room you already have
- Add up the lumens printed on every bulb and fixture in the room.
- Compare with the table above.
- If you are under, the fix is usually one more source in a dark corner, not a brighter ceiling light.
- If you are over and it feels harsh, the fix is dimming or moving light lower, not removing a lamp.
